Recent rumblings on the local neighborhood app have called attention to changes in progress at the former Krakatoa space that has stood vacant since last summer. According to a recent permit filing, Golden Hill’s own Birria El Rey will move from its modest walk-up eatery on 25th Street just steps down the block to set up its brick-and-mortar restaurant in its place.

Owner Cristian Marin Vazquez tells What Now San Diego he has gained access to the longtime coffee house location and will begin the transformation of the space soon into the new El Rey restaurant.
Birria El Rey is known for its Tijuana-style birria, with an all-day menu of tacos, burritos, tortas, plus birria-loaded ramen, fries, and chilaquiles. With limited sidewalk seating in its current space, El Rey is primarily a takeout restaurant. The new 1,014-square-foot location will offer additional indoor and outdoor patio seating to guests.
Birria El Rey is in the early stages of planning updates to 1128 25th Street. An opening date for the new space is projected for Summer 2023. Find the match for your birria craving by following Birria El Rey on Instagram.
