The company’s newest location is set to take over roughly 50,000 square feet of ground-floor and mezzanine space at the base of a new 34-story residential tower coming to the corner of Front & A, according to a permit application submitted to the city of San Diego in December and first reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune. The upcoming Front & A high-rise, which is under construction, is the latest from Holland Partner Group and is expected to be completed in the second quarter of 2026.

When the new Whole Foods Market opens in a few years, customers will notice the grocery store takes up the majority of the ground floor of the development, as well as the building’s mezzanine level, which includes separate spaces for an employee lounge and customer seating area, according to plans. This will be the company’s fourth location in San Diego, specializing in organic produce and prioritizing dietary preferences. The new grocery store will compete with the recently announced Sprouts Farmers Market, coming to the Campus at Horton later this year.

“We are thrilled to be bringing Whole Foods as a much-needed, new high-end full-service grocery option to downtown San Diego,” Brent Schertzer, an executive with Holland, tells the Union-Tribune. “Our downtown has long demanded more of this important retail, and the neighborhood will greatly benefit from the activation this use provides. The redevelopment vision for these blocks is to create a true mixed-use village that supports an ecosystem of residential, office, and dining options, serving not just our residents and office tenants but energizing downtown as a whole. We look forward to Whole Foods serving as a neighborhood amenity and furthering the growing connection between the western and central districts of downtown.”
