Mingei International Museum has been a prominent feature of San Diego’s Balboa Park since 1978. The museum has recently embarked upon a $55 million dollar renovation and has been closed to the public. That is about to change. The museum will re-open on September 3rd and in doing so reveal its new plaza, theatre, library, and more. And with all of these new additions, comes a little something for the foodies of San Diego.

Tracy Borkum’s Urban Kitchen Group will open two new concepts inside the museum. Craft Café, a casual, grab-and-go breakfast and lunch spot, will open with the museum in early September, while a sit-down, more formal restaurant, Artifact, will come later.

San Diego Magazine reports Borkum is teaming up with executive chef Tim Kolanko and designer Jennifer Luce to create the two new spaces. Artifact is projected to open in mid-October.

If you haven’t already enjoyed some of what Urban Kitchen Group has to offer, you’ll want to check them out. “Tracy Borkum’s collection of CUCINA restaurants are known for combining the flavors of Italy with the organic freshness of Southern California,” says the group’s website. “CUCINA’s from-scratch menus, include shareable portions of luxurious house made pasta, innovative pizza, cleverly crafted large plates, an elevated selection of antipasti, dolci, and a signature cheese and salumi program.” While Artifact appears to be heading in a slightly different direction, it is nonetheless certain to elevate any Balboa Park experience.
