If you’re a Pacific Beach local you’re probably familiar with corner that housed Denny’s for more than 50 years. The 24-hour diner closed down in 2018 after a fire. Three years later, local restaurateur Scott Slater has plans to bring the space back to life in the form of a multi-concept restaurant, Mission + Garnet.

“With such an iconic space in San Diego we wanted to activate this corner and provide as many awesome menus to service the PB community,” Slater wrote in an email to What Now San Diego. “By reducing indoor seating, expanding the outdoor patio our brands will be primarily take-out allowing us to maximize kitchen space and support multiple brands each with its own store front, menu and personality.” With that in mind, each concept will have its own brand and personality, but the space as a whole will be funky, beachy, and modern.

Spitfire Tacos, Head Lettuce, and Early Bird Breakfast Burritos are three of the concepts headed to Mission + Garnet. “We will also add an upscale hot dog concession fronting Garnet, a “whole meat” sandwich brand and a dessert walk up window,” added Slater, who recommends bites like the Peri Peri chicken bowl and 1lb breakfast burritos, Bacon Bird and The Firebird. Spitfire Tacos serves up spit roasted meats like al pastor, jerk chicken, and Korean BBQ pork belly. Is your mouth watering yet?

Slater says Mission + Garnet aims to open Memorial Day 2022. So in the meantime, you should probably check out those existing restaurants for a sneak peek at what you can expect next year.
