The restaurant, originally operated by celebrity chef Brian Malarkey, has been run by Common Stock Hospitality for the past three years, taking over during the pandemic. Now, the group will hand over operations to Whisknladle Hospitality Group, led by owner Arturo Kassel and chef/ partner Ryan Johnston, according to SanDiegoVille. The new ownership is expected to take over operations starting at the beginning of December 2023.

“We’re honored to have had the opportunity to operate Farmer & The Seahorse in partnership with Alexandria Real Estate for the past three years,” CSR co-founder Brian Douglass tells SanDiegoVille. “It has been an invaluable experience, and we cherish the incredible friendships we’ve built along the way. Our core mission since the day we started our group has been to bring positive change to neighborhoods and improve the lives of people we work with and serve.”

Kassel and Johnston have opened several restaurants throughout San Diego County, including Whisknladle, Catania Coastal Italian, Gravity Heights, and Park Commons food hall. Whisknladle Hospitality Group is also working on opening a second home for Gravity Heights Brewery in Mission Valley sometime next year. Common Stock Hospitality has chosen to step away from this concept to focus on its other concepts, including Common Stock, found in Hillcrest and Banker’s Hill, and the recently opened Books & Records bar and restaurant in Banker’s Hill.

“While we are very fortunate to have been a part of the Alexandria Real Estate community, this transition allows us to return 100% of our focus to our mission,” Douglass said. “We are excited to welcome Arturo Kassel and the Whisknladle team. They are wonderful operators, and we can’t wait to see how they make Farmer & The Seahorse their own.”
