Longtime East Village staple BASIC Bar/Pizza, which has been at 410 10th Avenue since 2006, will reportedly relocate early next year.
The lease of the first restaurant from URBN Restaurant Inc. is set to expire next spring, and the building’s owners reportedly can’t come to an agreement with owner Jon Mangini, according to SanDiegoVille. There are rumors that the landlord wants to open their own restaurant concept in the space. If this is true, BASIC Bar/Pizza will relocate nearby, likely to a base floor unit within the Park 12 mixed-use high-rise complex near Petco Park.
When Mangini, an East Coast transplant, opened BASIC Bar/ Pizza in 2006, it quickly became a staple for neighbors and visitors of Downtown, especially after Padre games. Since then, the concept has been regarded as one of the best pizza spots in San Diego, offering New Haven-style pizza to late-night patrons. Several high-profile media outlets, including the New York Times, MTV, and The Los Angeles Times, have recognized the pizzeria for its quality.
The success of BASIC Bar/Pizza led Mangini and URBN Restaurant Inc. to open multiple locations of the restaurant’s sister concept, URBN Coal Fired Pizza restaurants, including in North Park, Vista, El Cajon, Encinitas, and within One Paseo in Del Mar. Despite the multiple locations of URBN, BASIC Bar/ Pizza has become known for its raw industrial design elements within a massive 5,000-square-foot space, which was converted from an authentic 1912 warehouse.
