Previously, What Now San Diego reported on Ballast Point divesting its headquarters and selling the site to a yet-to-be-announced company, leaving the former tenant to brew its lagers and ales on a contract basis within the facility by an undisclosed brewing partner. It’s now become official that Athletic Brewing, the country’s largest non-alcoholic beer company, has purchased the site’s 300-barrel and 150-barrel brewhouses, cellar, packaging line, QA lab, and business offices, according to San Diego Beer News.

The facility will remain non-operational for the next year and a half while it undergoes renovations. The former tenant’s parent company, Kings & Convicts, will continue operating the bar-and-restaurant component as a Ballast Point-branded public venue for at least 18 months. It’s unclear if Athletic Brewing or a different entity will replace the public venue after a year and a half, but previous reports suggest Kings & Convicts will look for a replacement for the bar and restaurant, but nothing has been confirmed. Ballast Point has sat in this 107,000-square-foot facility since 2014 and officially closed on the deal on May 31. This follows several other changes within Ballast Point in the past few months.

“We plan to utilize the capacity at Carroll Way to its fullest with the addition of a brand-new, state-of-the-art packaging hall capable of filling 1,200 cans per minute and implementing some amazing brewing technology which will enhance sustainability as we continue to reduce our use of one of our most precious resources – water,” Co-Founder and Chief Product Officer John Walker tells SD Beer News. “Our team will take the next 18 months to make efficiency and food-safety modifications while we build the packaging hall, and we look forward to the day when we can fire up both the main and the pilot brewhouses.”
