Arriving just in time for San Diego’s fall weather, new outdoor drinking destination The Gärten will open at 5322 Banks Street in Bay Park on Saturday, October 8 and invites San Diegans to experience its weekend-long grand opening celebration including live music, new drinks and eats, and the public debut of the spacious multi-vendor concept.

First announced earlier this year, the 2,500-square-foot biergarten-style space—a collaboration between four San Diego brands who will also be The Gärten’s dedicated onsite vendors—brings locals a new expanse to explore wide-ranging craft beers, mead and sparkling wines not available elsewhere, as well as artisanal pizza and more made-from-scratch eats.

As an outdoor gathering spot, The Gärten takes its inspiration from the renowned beer gardens of Europe and as such is designed to be a casual drinking and dining destination where neighbors can come together at numerous communal tables. Guests can order from their choice of the four vendors before self-seating on the patio, where live music and entertainment will take place more than 150 nights each year. The Gärten’s vendors, all partners in the project, include:

Deft Brewing: Focus on classic beer styles from Belgium, Germany and the British Isles – and also keeps a couple IPAs on tap for San Diegans seeking hop-forward flavors. The brewery also offers board games, hosts weekly trivia and European-inspired beer celebrations throughout the year such as Deftoberfest.

Lost Cause Meadery: Offers a wide array of meads and ciders ranging from dry to sweet, refreshing to complex, and influenced by honey sourced locally as well as from around the world. First-time mead drinkers can enjoy a lineup of lightly carbonated session meads, or dive into complex sipping meads for a more advanced experience.

Pizza Cassette: Launched this year, Pizza Cassette’s wood-fired pizzas, sandwiches and more are the creations of pizzaiolos Chris Herko and Jimmy Terwilliger, a former competitor for Team USA in the World Pizza Championships. The from-scratch pizzas made with red and white oak sourced from Santee include flavors like the Hornet’s Nest (soppressata, jalapeño, Thai chili oil, honey) and the Sausage & Citrus (house fennel sausage, spinach, ricotta, mozzarella, lemon, olive oil) plus gluten free and vegan options. Classic sandwiches include the three-meat Italian with provolone, while weekly specials will range from Banh Mi to Philly cheesesteak and beyond. Lighter eats include marinated olives, pita with eggplant tapenade and hummus, seasonal salads and sorbets. Pizza Cassette will also host pop-up pizza classes and prix fixe dinners.

Oddish Wine: Slated to open toward late 2022, Oddish Wine is a new concept from the founders of Lost Cause Meadery and will offer sparkling wines, ciders, pet-nats, piquettes and other experimental fruit fermentation projects.

The Gärten’s grand opening on Saturday, October 8 and Sunday, October 9 will include live music at varying times throughout the weekend, as well as new items from each vendor including the first-ever amaro to be released by Lost Cause alongside mead cocktails also launching that weekend, autumnal craft beers from Deft Brewing, and a limited edition ice cream from Pizza Cassette made with Lost Cause mead.

When The Gärten opens its doors on October 8, what began as a few local brands operating on the same block in Bay Park will transform into a social hub and destination biergarten.

The Gärten is located at 5322 Banks Street, San Diego, California 92110. Deft Brewing is open seven days of the week; Lost Cause Meadery and Pizza Cassette are open Wednesday through Sunday.
