Phillip Esteban’s White Rice has been delivering silog bowls, a popular Filipino savory rice dish, throughout San Diego since 2020. ‘Silog’ refers to the garlic rice and egg that comprise these dishes, and which are typically enjoyed for breakfast, although any other time of the day will do. According to their website, White Rice’s menu, which features these dishes, is “an exploration of childhood memories through bold Filipino flavors.”

Esteban is an award-winning chef from National City. “Through his travels he was exposed to the power of hospitality to act as a platform for community and a vehicle for storytelling,” says the website. Now that exploration is looking a little more permanent.

Esteban’s White Rice will open a food stall in Liberty Public Market next month. The San Diego Union Tribune reported, “after a pandemic-extended delay, chef Phillip Esteban’s White Rice food stall at Liberty Public Market in Point Loma will open June 12.” White Rice currently operates as a seven day a week delivery service out of 780 Hollister St. in San Diego.

The restaurant’s mantra is “Rice Bowls for All,” and they mean it. According to their website, the restaurant’s campaign 1for1SD means “for every meal purchased, Open Gym matches and donates to those in need.” Esteban’s restaurant has partnered with San Diego Food Bank, Olivewood Gardens, and other local community organizations.

So, starting in June, you’ll be able to see the bowls being made in action. Liberty Public Market is located at 2820 Historic Decatur Road, in an old Navy building.
