What Now San Diego spoke with Meraz about his deep roots in the community. Beginning as a pop-up coffee unit, they served customers by mobile request only. Now, they’re prepping their new facility, which used to house a cell phone store, to whip up creative coffee and fruit-based beverages. Meraz explains, “I grew up here in South San Diego. My family moved here in the Sixties. I went to Montgomery High School. I’m a part of this community.”

Meraz currently lives in Tijuana and is taking the exciting opportunity to bring Mexican Coffee to San Diego. The cafe will specialize in Mexican Coffee Beans, will serve all your favorite Espresso-based drinks plus alternative milks, even rice milk. Their Slushies are a standout menu item, featuring flavors like Watermelon and Tamarindo with a spicy twist. Drinks are rimmed with homemade Chamoy, made by Felipe’s sister.

Everything is coming together ahead of their Fall opening, Meraz says, “Right now the cafe is a blank slate. We’re working on the design concept. I’m talking with local artists for their interpretation of a new logo. The website is in progress and we’re working out details for the ordering process since we have the space on the side of the building for easy pick-up.” They’ll also partner up with a local bakery for fresh pastries to compliment their drinks.
