Buried in the contentious comments of a recent Instagram update from Dark Horse Coffee Roasters is this announcement: “after long delays, setbacks, and basically rebuilding a 100 year old building from the ground up, we are pleased to announce that our final payment to the city has been submitted and we are now awaiting our final inspection so we can open!” Dark Horse shared the update about its South Park location just two days ago, on August 14th.

On the same post, commentors critiqued the company for announcing a new minimum wage of $15 for their employees, suggesting such a wage is merely the bare minimum and not livable. Other commentors applauded the company for its transparency.

Dark Horse Coffee originally announced its South Park expansion back in March of 2019. Permit intel obtained by What Now San Diego shows the new shop is 1,036 square-feet. Co-owners and brothers Bryan and Daniel Charlson could not be reached for comment.

The South Park spot, which will be the company’s 7th San Diego location, will open on the corner of Juniper and 30th, and at it patrons will find not just coffee from the well-known roaster, but ice cream too. Mutual Friend Ice Cream, a sister company of Dark Horse, first started scooping ice cream in October of 2018 and offers up “small batch, craft ice cream to San Diego with the goal of creating quality flavors that are both nostalgic and unique at the time same.” Dark Horse Coffee’s original announcement suggests the South Park location will also carry their signature coffees as well as San Diego’s own Skinny Donuts.
